James Bordonaro is a common sense Kansan dedicated to returning fiscal restraint to Washington after seven years of unchecked Republican spending. Other issues important to his campaign are national security, illegal immigration and reducing taxes on the middle class.

"This will be a campaign based on ideas and practical solutions," Bordonaro said. "My campaign will not be focused on negative attacks about the incumbent, but will instead point to his votes in Congress which a majority of our district disagrees with."

"I seek to return civility to Washington D.C. and to political discourse in general. This will be a campaign of new ideas and hope for the future direction of our country."

James Bordonaro lives in Emporia with his wife of 17 years, Gaelynn Wolf Bordonaro, and their three dogs. Gaelynn currently serves as the director of Emporia State University's Art Therapy master's level program. Both received their graduate degrees from Florida State University.

Bordonaro is the second oldest of 4 siblings. His mother attended Ottawa University in Ottawa, KS and is now retired from a career in educational testing assessment. His father retired as a pharmacist with the Veterans Administration.

I am a fifth generation Kansan and have lived in North Lyon County for nearly 25 years.  I grew up in El Dorado and graduated from the El Dorado public school system.  Growing up as a child of divorced parents, I am very proud that my husband and I were able to hold our family together through many difficult times.  Even though Kenny has been a skilled carpenter in the Emporia area for over thirty years, we raised our family for sixteen of those years without health insurance.  At the same time, we sacrificed so that I could complete my degree at Emporia State University as a non-traditional student with two very young children, three part-time jobs, and a heavy load of grants, scholarships and subsidized loans.  I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics.

My work experience centers around a commitment to developing and sustaining rural community resources.  I began with a term on the North Lyon County School Board which led to my interest in creating a licensed child care center for families in our rural area.  The North Lyon County Youth Association was a grassroots effort which led to nearly $500,000 in funding for a new child care center and community center.  When there were no employment opportunities that would allow me the flexibility to be at important events in my children’s life, I created Sazac; a home-based business that designed and produced custom team uniforms for wrestlers across the nation.  As the children became more independent, I got involved in improving healthcare quality at Newman Regional Health.  I measured and compared statistics on patient satisfaction and patient outcomes to support performance improvement team efforts throughout the hospital.  In 2006, I had the opportunity to manage some of the most innovative programs for youth leadership development in the nation.  Through the Girl Scout Council of the Flint Hills, I piloted projects in anti-violence, anti-bullying, social entrepreneurship for teens, changing attitudes and behaviors related to healthier lifestyles, and bridging gaps and building leadership skills in girls who are from families of recent immigration.   I continue to volunteer with another youth leadership development program, the Chase County Drug-Free Action Team.

My husband, Ken, and I have been married for over twenty eight years.  He is the Construction Coordinator for Newman Regional Health.  Our daughter, Sabra, is a Kansas State University graduate with a degree in Family Life and Community Service.  She is a Circulation Manager at the Barr Library in Fort Knox, Kentucky.  Her husband, Travis, is a Sergeant First Class with the United States Army.  He is currently a Senior Tank Instructor at Fort Knox, and has served tours in Korea, Iraq and Bosnia.  Our son, Zachary, graduated through the GED program and is a driller with an oilfield company based in Eureka.  He lives in Emporia.

My mother, Miny Swigart, lives in El Dorado and cares for one-year-olds at Butler County Community College Educare.  Ken’s mother, Geneva Phillips, lives in Broadview Towers in downtown Emporia.

I want to be your Lyon County clerk because I believe in open, accommodating government, dedicated to serving all citizens for the common good, whether that means insuring your taxes are levied correctly or guaranteeing that your vote counts. Your county clerk’s office should be a ready source of information and assistance, not a bureaucratic hurdle.

As your county clerk, I will bring to this position Leadership that provides vision and support; Integrity that does what is right for the common good; Decisiveness that not only makes the decision but follows through; an attitude of Empowerment of the people to make government work for them, in the way they want and need it to; and a dedication to Public Service.

I have lived in Lyon County for five years. Since coming to Emporia, I have regularly volunteered for activities in the community, most notably in helping to raise funds, recruit volunteers and organize the construction of the new Peter Pan Playground. I have been active in the Chamber of Commerce and am a member of the 2004 class of Leadership Emporia.

My wife Denise and I have two children, Jack and Anne. We are active members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

I first moved to Kansas in 1980. I grew up in northeast Nebraska, at Wayne, the oldest of nine children, blessed with a good home and good parents. I took my first “job” at age nine when I began delivering newspapers. During high school and on into college, I worked every summer (and sometimes over the winter break), at the same local lumberyard for four years.

I am a veteran of the U.S. Army. I served overseas five years, one year in Vietnam and four in Japan. Before going to Vietnam, I completed a 47-week course in South Vietnamese at the Defense Language Institute. After leaving the active Army, I returned to college and earned my bachelor’s decree in history at Creighton University in Omaha. While in college, I enlisted in the Army Reserve for one year. Several years later I joined the Kansas Army National Guard, where I served for 16 years and retired in 2000 at the rank of master sergeant with a total of 23 years of military service.

In my professional career, I have worked in both private businesses and public institutions, at both the professional and management levels. Most of my experience is in the communications field, having worked as a reporter for The Manhattan Mercury; an editor and managing editor for three trade magazine companies serving the land improvement contracting, purebred beef breeding and metal fabricating industries; a public information specialist at Kansas State University; a public affairs specialist for the Kansas Army National Guard and as the community relations director for U.S.D. 253, Emporia. Since October 2004 I have been selling advertising for Kansas Radio, Inc. (“The Wave”).
